The Choir

Since its debut in 1990, the Musicanova choir has distinguished itself with a diverse repertoire that, while emphasizing Renaissance and contemporary music, also spans genres from medieval to pop.

Deeply committed to fostering choral singing among young people, Musicanova collaborates with various Roman schools, from which most of its singers are drawn.

The choir is part of the Musicanova association, which includes four other choirs: the Eos female choir, the Iride youth choir, and the Primo Levi and Enriques high school choirs. Upholding its associative principles, Musicanova is dedicated to promoting choral singing among young people, firmly believing in the musical and human values of choral activities.

The choir’s concert activities have taken it beyond Italy to Denmark, Finland, Greece, Sweden, Spain, Hungary, and Poland in 2015. It has garnered recognition and awards at some of the most prestigious international choral competitions, including those in Tours (France), Maribor (Slovenia), Marktoberdorf (Germany), Cork (Ireland), Gorizia, and Arezzo. In 2008, Musicanova won 1st Prize at the 6th International Competition in Miltenberg (Germany) and was a guest at the Avignon Sacred Music Festival. At the 45th National Competition of Vittorio Veneto, the Musicanova Choir won the “Grand Prize” as the best choir of the 2011 edition. In 2012, at the National Competition of Anguillara Sabazia, it won 1st prize and the special Renaissance prize, an honor also awarded at the 60th Guido d’Arezzo International Competition. In 2014, at the 53rd Seghizzi International Competition in Gorizia, the choir won several awards, including 1st place in the Renaissance and Baroque categories, 2nd place in the spiritual category, and 3rd place in the contemporary category, among other recognitions, making it the best mixed-voice choir in the competition. The choir secured 2nd Prize at the 37th International Competition in Varna (Bulgaria) in May 2016. In 2017, the Musicanova choir won the Grand Prix at the Florilege Vocal de Tours International Competition (France), earning the right to participate in the prestigious 2018 European Grand Prix for Choral Singing held in Maribor (Slovenia), reserved for the world’s best choral groups.

The group has dedicated focused study to popular music, resulting in the show “Roma che in… canta,” an original performance blending choral music and theater. Representing regional choral singing, the Musicanova choir presented this show at the 2015 Milan EXPO.

The discography of Musicanova, showcasing the choir’s diverse musical interests, features self-produced CDs that span ancient polyphony, contemporary compositions, and recordings of both Renaissance and modern masses. They have also collaborated with renowned artists such as Ennio Morricone, Andrea Guerra, and Marco Frisina, and contributed to CDs for celebrated singers like Mina, Bocelli, and Branduardi.

In recent years, Musicanova has embarked on several high-profile projects. These include the opening concert at the 24th International Competition in Verona, performances of Mozart’s Requiem and John Rutter’s Requiem, and an invitation to the 30th edition of the international festival Voci d’Europa in Porto Torres, Sardinia. Notable performances include a concert at Caracalla with José Carreras and Carly Paoli for UNICEF in 2015, and another with Carly Paoli and Andrea Bocelli at the Roman Forum for the “Music for Mercy” concert, which was broadcast on RAI 1 in July 2016. In 2017, the choir was honored to perform as a guest choir at the 65th edition of the Guido d’Arezzo International Polyphonic Competition, one of Europe’s most prestigious choral events. Additionally, under the initiative of Maestro Manuel De Sica, they held a commemorative concert in Siena Cathedral in memory of Vittorio De Sica, 40 years after his passing. The choir has also frequently performed at the Pisa Cathedral as part of the “Anima Mundi” event.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Association in 2019, the Musicanova Choir organized a series of themed concerts and invited the esteemed pianist and composer Steve Dobrogosz to Rome. During this special occasion, he accompanied the choir and orchestra on the piano for a performance of his Mass.
